Jazz and Blues Research:

Story Arc's

Scroll Down

“Story arcs are the overall shape of rising and falling tension or emotion in a story. This rise and fall is created via plot and character development.”

  • Oxford Dictionary Definition.

Jazz and blues requires a troy arc with rises and falls to build suspense, relief and intrigue for the player. The best way to plot a story arc is to base it off of one of the 6 most famous, classical, archetypal plot arcs as follows.

1. RAGS TO RICHES [A COMPLETE RISE]

2. RICHES TO RAGS [A FALL]

3. MAN IN A HOLE [FALL THEN RISE]

4. ICARUS [RISE THEN FALL]

5. CINDERELLA [RISE THEN FALL THEN RISE]

6. OEDIPUS [FALL THEN RISE THEN FALL]

Our game will loosely follow a Cinderella Story Arc. The protagonists will start off optimistic and full of hope! They will start their adventure with the goal of finding the end of the wall and meeting up. Towards the start of the game, they will overcome easy obstacles which will eventually scale with difficulty once the players have some experience with the game. Through progression, the player will hopefully share the same level of optimism as the characters, that they are doing well and achieving their goal. However, what makes a story interesting is plot twists, subverted expectations and the fall before the rise. If the players witness segregation, hatred and a challenging obstacle towards the middle of the game, their interest should hopefully be rejuvenated at a peak of the story.
