Museum

The British

Fables

The British Museum housed a lot of information about Ancient Greece. Displays stretched across rooms and showed off sculpture, architecture, and relics of the time. What stood out to me most was the recreation of the Nereid Monument which was built as a tomb to house Arbinas, a Xanthian dynast of the period. The tomb showed off Ionic pillar structures, freestanding statues of women and scenes of hunting contained within the architrave frieze. I sat looking at this area for a while, and drew one of the statues that was found in the recreation. Below you can see the tomb recreated:

I also visited a room which showed just one corner of the Parthenon. Seeing it in person really helped me visualise the size of the building, everything seemed so out of proportion, and it was helpful to understand what scale the Parthenon is. For my game, I may need to show temples as points of interest within the narrative of world, so seeing the size of the Parthenon in person may be influential when planning the scale of the game.

Besides architecture, there were a few rooms which showed off items which archaeologists have discovered over the years. There were countless displays of Athenian pots, weaponry and armour. Although I am still unsure what the game may be, seeing these objects in person may influence the style of the game. The elegant design on the pots could be really interesting to use as an art style for the game. I have already done a lot of research into Athenian pottery, and there are no other projects out there which focus the art style of a game on the designs of ancient Greece.

Overall, I found the tip to the British Museum to be enlightening for me and my project. Although I had seen a lot of similar stuff online, seeing it in person really helped visualise what Ancient Greece would have looked like, and to what scale. I spent the whole day in the museum and really enjoyed sitting down, drawing what I saw and thinking about how everything in the room could be gamified or included in my project.
